SEO vs AEO: why optimizing only for Google is already half a strategy

SEO vs AEO: why optimizing only for Google is already half a strategy — The Pulse Studio

SEO and AEO don’t compete: they cover two halves of the same search. SEO fights for the click on Google; AEO fights to be the answer an AI delivers without a click. If your strategy only contemplates Google rankings, you’re optimizing for the half of the market that still clicks, and ignoring the half that already asks ChatGPT or Perplexity directly.

For twenty years SEO had a single question: how do I show up higher on Google? That question is still valid, but it’s no longer enough. Since ChatGPT went mainstream (starting in 2023) and Google began showing AI Overviews, a growing share of searches ends in a generated answer, with no site visit. According to an Ahrefs study across 300,000 keywords, the presence of an AI Overview reduces position 1 CTR by 58%. A Seer Interactive analysis of 25 million impressions found organic CTR dropped from ~1.76% to 0.61% on queries with AI Overviews. For those searches, your position 3 on Google doesn’t exist. What exists is whether the AI cited you or not.

How is AEO different from SEO?

That’s the underlying difference. SEO optimizes for a ranking algorithm; AEO optimizes for a model that synthesizes a response and decides whom to attribute. SEO rewards keywords and backlinks; AEO rewards clarity, verifiable data, and entity authority. A Princeton, Georgia Tech, and IIT Delhi study on GEO showed that adding statistics improves visibility in generative responses by 41%, and citing external sources raises it by 115% for low-position content. An AI doesn’t cite the best-keyworded paragraph: it cites the cleanest, most attributable statement.

This is where a principle that organizes the whole play applies: AI lowered the floor on execution; the premium moved to the ceiling. Anyone can generate a decent SEO article with AI in minutes. That’s precisely why that content no longer differentiates: it falls into generic drift, the effect where AI output without senior judgment converges to the market average and becomes indistinguishable. What an AI chooses to cite is the opposite of average: a clear position, a concrete data point, an author with real credentials.

So do I abandon SEO?

No. The practical conclusion isn’t to abandon SEO; it’s to stop treating it as the complete strategy. Technical SEO (speed, schema, structure) is the foundation AEO runs on. But the strategic question changed: it’s no longer just “how do I rank,” it’s “how do I get cited.”

Frequently asked questions

Does AEO replace SEO? No. AEO is built on top of technical SEO. Without a solid base (speed, schema, structured content), an AI has fewer signals to cite you. They’re worked together, not one in place of the other.

How do I know if an AI is citing my content? Ask it directly. Search the key questions for your business in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, and check whether your site appears as a source. It’s the most direct way to audit your visibility in generative engines.
